The thin roll: one filling, a little rice, a wrap of nori, cut into six. The simplest sushi on our menu and the least expensive way in — at Aikawa in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
Hosomaki means “thin roll”. It is the smallest format in sushi: a single ingredient at the centre, a thin layer of seasoned rice around it, nori on the outside, rolled and cut into six pieces about the width of a thumb.
With only one filling there is nowhere to hide, so hosomaki is judged on the quality of that one ingredient and on the rice. It is also the traditional palate cleanser — a cucumber roll between richer courses resets the mouth.
Aikawa is at Galeries des Sources in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, in the middle of the West Island. If you have been searching for hosomaki near you, we are a short drive from most of the island’s west end.
Hosomaki is also the easiest sushi to share with someone who is unsure about raw fish — five of the eight rolls above contain none at all.
Six. You can also order any of them as a single témaki hand roll at the same price.
Very. One ingredient per roll means you know exactly what you are eating, and Cucumber, Avocado, Sweet Yam, Pok Pok and Shrimp Roll contain no raw fish at all.
Cucumber and Avocado are marked GF on our menu. Tell your server if you need a gluten-free soy sauce.
Yes. Our full menu is available for take-out and delivery, and thin rolls travel better than most.
Rolled thin, cut into six, and judged entirely on the rice and what is at its centre.
