A cone of crisp nori, filled by hand and eaten straight away. At Aikawa, every roll on our menu can be ordered as a témaki — one piece, made your way, in Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
Témaki means “hand roll”. Instead of being rolled and sliced into rounds, the seaweed is folded into a cone, filled with rice and the ingredients of your choice, and handed over immediately. You eat it with your fingers, like an ice cream cone.
The reason it is served that way is texture. Nori softens within minutes of touching rice, so a hand roll is built to be eaten at once, while the seaweed still cracks. It is the one sushi format that genuinely cannot wait.
Aikawa is at Galeries des Sources in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, in the middle of the West Island. If you have been searching for a temaki hand roll near you, we are a short drive from most of the island’s west end.
A word of advice: témaki is the one thing on our menu we would ask you to eat here rather than take away. The nori is at its best in the first two minutes.
All of them. Every Mini Maki, Hosomaki and Futomaki on our menu is listed with both formats — Maki to share, or Témaki as a single hand roll.
One. A témaki is a single cone made for one person, which makes it an easy way to try several fillings in one sitting.
With your hands, right away, starting at the wide end. Do not let it sit — the seaweed loses its crispness within a few minutes.
Yes. Avocado, Cucumber and Sweet Yam are all vegetarian, and the first two are gluten free as well.
Tell us which filling and we will fold it at the counter. It should reach you while the nori still cracks.
